Training Game-Based Competencies Through a Game

Over the years, we have reflected on how to teach others about the wonders of games, game mechanics, and the ways in which games can function as meaningful activities in pedagogical contexts. We eventually concluded that the most appropriate way to do this was, quite simply, through a game. Our aim is to offer a hands-on experience that supports a deeper understanding of these qualities. First, we developed a taxonomy of competencies related to creating social bonding activities through shared gameplay. Building on this, we created a prototype of a meta-game designed to train these competencies.

This session revolves around two main themes. The first concerns how competencies in games can be developed through gameplay. The second explores how artificial intelligence can be integrated into physical games by combining a card-based game with a chatbot powered by a large language model.

We have developed a game prototype that enables conference participants to explore which competencies are required to create meaningful, game-based activities in higher education.

To engage with the game, participants are asked to identify students’ motivations as well as their own; consider relevant games, mechanics, and rules; decide when and where a game is appropriate to use; and define suitable goals for the activity, such as curricular or learning objectives.

The outcome is a meta-game – a game designed to strengthen participants’ understanding of games and their pedagogical potential.

While playing the game, participants are supported by a chatbot that acts as a collaborative partner and facilitator throughout the process.

A meta-reflection within a meta-reflective space – a journey into the woods of a playful way in understanding game mechanics and emerging technologies.
